Significance of Title

The title of the poem “You Laughed and Laughed and Laughed” by Okara has powerful meaning. It is powerful because she uses the word laughed in almost every sentence. Her doing this shows that she wanted to get her point across. She is upset that people are laughing at her. They laugh at her for the wrong reasons. They laugh because of her heritage. Laughing is supposed to be a fun and happy thing, not to cut someone down. Towards the end of the poem, she starts saying that it is her turn to laugh. She is not saying this as a way of cutting down the person that laughed at her, she is saying that she is going to laugh because of life in general. Even though she was cut down her whole life, she is going to be the bigger person and not do what she had done to her. The way she reacts is very mature.
